ABOUT OUR SCHOOL
Elder Dr. Whiskeyjack School was designed with 21st century learning in mind.
Our Building
Our building has many collaborative spaces with soft comfortable furniture and abundant natural light. Three sets of learning stairs will be used for presentations or collaborative work, and will provide a community space during the lunch hour. Many of our classrooms have extra-large doorways to connect neighboring spaces or classrooms.
We are also proud that our school has been designed with the environment in mind with respect to energy use, water conservation and indoor air quality.
Our Programming
We offer both Regular and Advanced Placement programming (for grade 10 only in our inaugural year), as well as Interactions for students who have autism spectrum disorder.
We will offer a wide variety of CTS courses, Fine Arts, Physical Education and Languages supported with sports teams and student clubs.
Our Logo
Elder Dr. Francis Whiskeyjack is a lifelong learner who is dedicated to mentoring and advocating for students. His steadfast positivity and commitment to sharing traditional knowledge and teachings inspires the logo for Elder Dr. Francis Whiskeyjack High School.
The logo, composed of bold geometric shapes, takes form as an abstract bird, symbolizing the school’s mission to empower students to fearlessly explore their potential. The bird is inspired by the whiskeyjack jay, a direct reference to the school’s inspirational namesake. Known to be smart, resourceful and resilient, the whiskeyjack jay can be found throughout Indigenous stories.
Central to the design is the bird’s arrow-shaped head, pointing upwards as a testament to students’ journey towards growth and empowerment. They’re supported by an interconnected school community, depicted by the tail lines that converge in the center of the logo. These lines, reminiscent of the poles of a teepee, serve as a visual to the Cree roots that guide Elder Whiskeyjack’s work and the spirit of the school.
The circular nature of the logo along with lines that divide the shape into visual quadrants alludes to the Medicine Wheel—a key positive influence in Elder Whiskeyjack’s life. This visual reference further encapsulates the holistic worldview of Indigenous cultures, emphasizing the interconnectedness of all aspects of existence—physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. By drawing inspiration from the Medicine Wheel, the logo not only honors Elder Whiskeyjack’s personal journey and cultural heritage but also serves as a guiding principle for the school community, promoting balance, harmony and wellness in all endeavors.
