Sciences
Science represents humanity's endeavor to comprehend the natural and physical realm more deeply. It involves methods such as observation, inference, and experimentation. The wealth of knowledge acquired from scientific investigations spans across diverse fields such as biology, chemistry, and physics.
At Elder Dr. Francis Whiskeyjack School we will be offering general sciences which covers the concepts of chemistry, biology and physics combined in one course. Students wishing to pursue in depth learning of each Science will have the opportunity to take the Chemistry 20/30, Biology 20/30 and Physics 20/30 streams.
Chemistry: The study of matter's properties, composition, and changes. It covers atomic structure, chemical bonding, reactions, and stoichiometry. Lab work reinforces concepts, fostering critical thinking. Students gain insights into chemical phenomena, preparing them to understand the world at the molecular level and make informed decisions in diverse fields.
Biology: Biology is the study of living organisms and their interactions with each other and their environments. Students will learn about cell structure and function, genetics, evolution, ecology, and physiology. Through lab work and observation, students learn about life's complexities, from molecular interactions to ecosystems. This foundational knowledge prepares students to understand biological systems and their significance in the world.
Physics: Physics investigates the fundamental principles of mechanics, electricity, magnetism, optics, and thermodynamics. Through experimentation and problem-solving, students will explore the behavior of matter and energy, from the smallest particles to the vastness of the universe, preparing them for scientific inquiry and technological advancements.
Students will need to have at least one 20 level Science course to obtain their Alberta High School Diploma.
